Prior to recovering from basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, Glenn Gottselig of Washington, D.C., had never attempted to raise funds for a charity while training for or competing in running events. When a friend encouraged him to join the St. Jude Heroes Charity Athlete program, Gottselig took the opportunity to help children battling cancer and other catastrophic diseases that are treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®.
A two-time veteran of the Marine Corps Marathon, Gottselig decided to tackle the event again in 2008. He joined the St. Jude Heroes team and committed to raise funds for the children of St. Jude. Gottselig didn't know what to expect, he says, and at first, "It seemed a bit daunting - committing to raise a minimum of $1,000." But with the support of the program and generous benefactors, Gottselig managed to raise $4,800. "I still can't believe it," Gottselig says. "St. Jude has a great program and provided a fundraising kit that really made it easy."
He says there is no question as to whether or not he will participate in the program again in the future. Learning about the triumphs of the children has inspired him to continue his involvement with St. Jude Heroes. "These kids are the real heroes," he says.
